What is There Will be There Tomorrow_2008

'Corners' are functional geographical intersections
between everyday life and architecture and could
be described as spaces of commonality or spaces
of introspection. Within a city still under construction
air conditioned shopping malls are spaces where
people collect together and find shelter from the
extreme desert heat.

When they are working, construction workers
are encouraged to remain out of the 'public
eye' a practice inline with the city-states policy
of press censorship.
Neither inside nor outside
the building each worker brings imported cultural
specificities and rhythms into play. They shade
themselves from the midday sun for a brief
period of time. By changing positions each working
day, their temporary insertion into the architectural
site forms personal and indeterminate spaces that
disrupt the original spatial and social uses of
existing vernacular architecture.

These photographs form part of a body of
work that considers how leisure spaces
are visually represented in this city. Work
has evolved from collaborations with
architects and artists in the region. Research
considered how macro-micro spatial,
visual and transnational processes and locations
intersect as mobile, shared spaces. Focusing
on how the repetition of daily life adapts to
and could influence the speed of modernisation
and rapid architectural growth within this city.
